In 1903 William Harley and Arthur Davidson produced the first production motorcycle. This was to be a racing bike. Just one year later they had put out three production motorcycles for the public. Harley Davidson won it's first race in 1905 and hired it's first employee. Three years later they sold their first bike to the police department in Detroit. But it wasn't until 1912 that they started building it's factory and exporting bikes to Japan. By 1914 Harley Davidson formally enters itself into the national racing circuit. One third of all bikes made would be sold to the military in 1917, Corporal Roy Holtz would be the first soldier to ride a Harley-Davidson Motorcycle in Germany in 1918. Harley Davidson has always been there when the military needed motorcycles. By 1920 Harley Davidson would be the largest company in the world to produce motorcycles and had over 2000 dealers in 76 countries worldwide.
